Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil John Berendt
Our book for September 8, 2004. This book takes you through the strangest, yet most compelling cast of characters you'll ever meet. I read this book my senior year in college and couldn't put it down. For an entire weekend I was immersed in the world of Savannah and entertained by its people. Having lived in Charleston (Savannah's arch rival), I found myself intrigued by the differences and similarities.
A nice way to end the summer, this book is light and entertaining. Still, despite that, it presents many deeper issues; murder, love, religion, etc, with humor and sensitivity. My favorite character was and still is the Lady Chablis. She is complex, bizarre and always full of suprises. So much so, she played herself in the movie!

Related Information
If you like the book, check out the movie. Kevin Spacey should be enough to make you want to see it, but if you need more incentive, see it for the Lady Chablis. As an actress, she's not the best, but as a person she's bigger than life.
I also find that watching a movie of a book helps solidfy the story for me. So borrow it and enjoy (but read the book first). It'd make a nice afternoon.
